So the Lakers won 105-103 tonight, and I’m sure the Trevor Ariza steal of Anthony Carter’s inbounds play will be remembered as the play of the game.

But note, Lamar Odom’s length defending the shorter Carter on the inbounds sideline was key in forcing Carter to throw a lob, instead of a crisp pass, to Chauncey Billups, which gave Trevor the extra half-second needed to get to the ball before Chauncey had a chance. As I watched the inbounds play unfold, I actually wondered why Lamar was shading toward the half-court (to Carter’s right) instead of toward the basket, which would usually make more sense if you’re trying to prevent the other team from scoring. Keep the ball as far away from the basket as possible, right?
