Chick-y-baby

Posted in Lakers, Tribute, Video by minoroots on 08/05/2010

Chick Hearn passed away on August 5th, 2002. It’s hard to believe that it’s already been 8 years.

Do yourself a favor and go check out the tribute to Chick from TNLP blog.

I never had a chance to meet the man himself but it seemed like I knew him forever because I grew up listening to him and because we shared that one common ground of basketball. Chick Hearn brought people together with his infectious enthusiasm of the game… and his enthusiasm of life itself.

With Spero Dedes gone, I’ll miss Chick even more during the upcoming season…

Re: The LeBron Decision Show

To quote Orlando Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy (via Orlando Sentinel):

Come on, an hour long? It takes 15 seconds to say “I’ve decided to stay in Cleveland” but we’ve got another 59 minutes and 45 seconds to, what? Promote LeBron James? As if we don’t do that enough. Look, the guy’s a great player and wherever he goes, my bet would be Cleveland, that place will be excited. But an hour long special?

Seeeriously.

Gus Johnson

Did y’all catch the K-State – Xavier game last night?? It was RIDIKOLOUS!

To quote my friend @SnoopDougE:

It must be some law of the universe that gus johnson gets the most exciting tourney games

He’s probably right. With UCLA-Gonzaga ’06 still fresh in my mind (the best call for that game was “OH THE FRESHMAN MBAH A MOUAABAUP#@$&^@!!!”), ol’ Gus came up with yet another gem last night:

No one captures March Madness excitement and emotion quite like Gus Johnson. There must have been like 30 “OHHH”s just from the highlights. He may not be so good from a professional standpoint of accurately calling a game (I can see why some would call it annoying), but I mean, come on. We all get lost in the moment sometimes, and Gus puts those emotions into words—even the ones that aren’t actual words.

To illustrate this, my favorite line of the night came at the end of the 1st overtime, when Jordan Crawford took the game-tying 3. It went something like:

Crawford’s gotta hurry…. UAHAHH*#$!…  OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (Color guy: “OH, NO”)… HE TIED IT!!

Like him or not, his name will be forever synonymous with great March Madness moments.

…By the way, in a year where everyone’s bracket seems to be completely busted, my bracket is doing miraculously well. Check it out: I’m ranked #977 in all of ESPN (probably out of over 5 million submissions), in the 100th percentile with a near-perfect Western bracket! This is probably as good as it will get, though. That Purdue pick is going to kill me.

It’s the type of shot you’d try pulling off during a game of HORSE—from behind the backboard. Usually we try from out of bounds, but on rare occasions, it can happen in-game.

And what the heck, how about some Josh Shipp:
